CNC & Lathe Setup Machinist

Department: Die Room
Location: Cleveland, OH

Overview: A senior machinist operates computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, such as lathes and milling machines, to cut and produce precision parts for machines, instruments, and tools. Senior Machinist repair or produce parts using both manual and automated equipment with precise measurements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all aspects of set-up and operation of all die room machinery
  • Must be able to machine quality tooling using Engine lathe(s), EDM, Drill Press(s), Shaper, Mattison grinder, Saw, Manual Bridge Port, Horizontal Mill, CNC Lathes, Mills, and Boring Mill.
  • Ability to use measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and other gages to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Monitors machine, tooling and cutting fluid levels.
  • Review samples, drawings, or instructions to understand specifications of output.
  • Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping.
  • Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job.
  • Monitor output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects.
  • Ensures that the lubrication / coolant tanks are filled, and chip buckets are emptied as necessary.
  • Cleans work area, machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Follows all safety and plant rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Vocational school or apprenticeship is a plus.
  • Minimum Four years related experience and/or training preferred.

Key Competencies

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to read and write simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively report relevant data and job specific information as needed.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to perform intermediate to advanced level mathematics.

Computer Skills:

  • Ability to navigate basic technology including but not limited to use of digital self-service platforms, time clocks and other systems where applicable.

Additional Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent manual dexterity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of metal properties and other material.
  • Familiarity with performing lock out/tag out as an authorized user.
  • Experience operating the overhead crane.
  • Satisfactory completion of Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts.
  • Use carts, dollies, cranes and jacks to transport material if needed.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and or move up to 40 lbs.
  • Tolerate potentially extreme temperature fluctuations impacted by weather and machinery.
  • Acclimate to high noise and vibration levels in workspaces.
  • Wear and adhere to all PPE guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards.

Work Environment:

The Senior Machinist interacts with historic machinery throughout the facility which often involves proximity to heat, noise, debris, overhead cranes and other potentially dangerous equipment. The Senior Machinist may encounter high levels of floor and overhead traffic due to material transportation within the department which can cause vibration and airborne disturbances.
