EH&S Coordinator

Department: Environmental Health & Safety
Location: Cleveland, OH

Overview: The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of employees within a workplace, as well as maintaining compliance with environmental regulations. The EH&S Coordinator suggests and follows through with changes to improve the safety and environment of the workplace by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports in the design and implementation of all safety programs,
  • Recommends improvements for health and safety within the facility.
  • Assists in the management of facility air, stormwater, wastewater, waste, and spill programs, including renewals, recordkeeping, and reporting.
  • Leads and assists in changes to environmental permits and programs related to operational modifications.
  • Collaborates on investigations, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Responds when necessary to on-site emergencies and accidents
  • Investigates on-the-job incidents and prepares detailed reports for both company and OSHA reporting.
  • Partners in developing and conducting training for employees on required OSHA and environmental topics, as well as other environmental, health, and safety procedures.
  • Assists in driving employee engagement through safety meetings and actively involving employees in safety initiatives.
  • Conducts audits, identify environmental, health, and safety hazards, and develop/implement corrective actions.
  • Serves as a proxy and/or point of contact regarding Federal, State, Local, and corporate EH&S requirements.
  • Acts as a liaison for local emergency response agencies.
  • Ensures awareness of changes in the regulatory landscape and implements necessary changes for continual compliance.
  • Works closely with site Human Resources to ensure effective implementation of training requirements and accurate/accessible reporting of training completion.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Occupational & Environmental Health Sciences, or related field.
  • Experience minimum of 1-3 years in EH&S or a related field.

Key Competencies

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Computer Skills:

  • Ability to navigate basic technology including but not limited to the use of digital self-service platforms, time clocks and other systems where applicable.
  • Experience with Microsoft office, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to influence the organization to accomplish EH&S objectives and a demonstrated commitment to a participative work environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Must have ability to confidently provide direction to hourly workforce with regard to safety and environmental situations.
  • Experience safeguarding and improving an ISO 14001 certified environment
  • First Responder/First Aid training preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts
  • Use carts, dollies, cranes and jacks to transport material if needed
  • Must be able to regularly lift and or move up to 40 lbs.
  • Climbing ladders and stairs to reach work at potential heights of 30 ft or more
  • Navigate narrow walkways, confined spaces and overhead mezzanines
  • Tolerate potentially extreme temperature fluctuations impacted by weather and machinery
  • Acclimate to high noise and vibration levels in workspaces
  • Wear and adhere to all PPE guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards.
  • Comfortable working in confined work environments

Work Environment:

The Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator interacts with historic machinery throughout the facility which often involves proximity to heat, noise, debris, conveyance systems and other potentially dangerous equipment. The Safety Coordinator will encounter high levels of floor and overhead traffic due to material transportation throughout the facility which can cause high levels of vibration and airborne disturbances. There are areas of paved and unpaved walkway, active shipping lanes and occasionally standing water to be cautious of.
